...itchy feet
...the idea of an Australia trip
...and the head full of wishes
? ? ?
? ? but where to go? ? ?
? ? ? ? ? ? ?
? ? ? ?
? ?
...a delirious decision making process
! ! !
! ! There to go! ! !
! ! ! ! ! ! not there! !
! ! ! !
...but the best thing is... ! ! !
! ! ! ! ! ! !
! !
...many advisors - many influencing opinions
>> The west is the best - if you wanna travel pure Australian Outback<<
>> The east… …Great Barrier Reef, Byron Bay, a coastline full of surfing spots… …surfing, surfing, surfing <<
>> Tasmania ist the best of the world - the best, THE beeeest <<
>> The west is the real Australia - the east is Ibiza <<
>> for Sydney - you need three weeks - indeed <<
Overstrained by too many wishes and travelling ideas and the tension between big Oz and a hand full of days for
going on vacation, we got the right recommendation at the right time:
>> If you wanna see a piece of typical
Australia why don't you try …THIS …trip <<

timeshift Vienna - Sydney: 9 hours
Sydney, a 4 million citizen
city on the south east coast of Australia / population 20,442,821,
Aboriginal population in Australia around 460,000
picked up at the airport by the king of nightlife - Torsten - our host and guide to Sydney.
His vehicle: a beige Ford Falcon equipped with a rugged kangaroo front bumper and a jumping Elvis
figure in the dash, reflects a picture of rolling 20 years through Australia and saying: "I`m a
part of it".
On the way from the airport to Artarmon through downtown we get an impression of the different
faces of this town: wide spread bay areas, a skyline of crowded skyscrapers reminding me of
Seattle but with more life in the streets, undenyable british architectural influences, city
boundaries - endless crags waiting to be climbed and beaches to surf.
The ambient says one thing: RELAX - that's the real Australian thing.

2030 km beeline and a 6 hour-flight from Sydney, in the middle of nowhere.
Red centre - Alice Springs
Surrounded by red with some green dabs. Cute airport - quite cute village - the metropolis of the
red centre surrounded with ranges. Quiet village atmosphere with an outskirt ambient …and in the
center a small hardcore touri-strip deluxe and two bleak hills giving you an overview on Alice… …and
Todd the runnel - usually dry, but not this time.
BOA73.TRAVEL.PICKS AROUND ALICE SPRINGS
Alice is a very good starting point for trails and tours in the red centre.
BOA73.TRIP.PICK: southbound to Alice: MacDONNELL RANGES: Very impressive arid landscape with a hand
full of gorges and waterholes. A pretty deserted area, because of the not existing designated
cheesy sight spots. To step into wilderness - try the Laparinja trail at Western MacDonnell Ranges.
Attention: day trails entry points close very early.
BOA73.PICK 2: DESERT PARK: if you haven't seen enough snakes in the wilderness, you finally will
get one more chance in the Desert Park + explanations about the Australian fauna and flora in the
red desert. More insects and lizards you will only find in the restrooms of Kings Canyon campground.

...685km south of Alice Springs in the middle of nowhere - Coober Pedy - the opal capital of Oz, if not the world.
50 km and 100 000 piles south of these first heralds you are standing
in the middle of Coober Pedy surrounded by bleak mounds paved with old wheels, opal shops and scrap.
Many of the 3500 inhabitants are living underground in rebuilt opal mines, so called Dugouts, keeping the rooms / caves
pretty cool against outside desert temperatures. There seem to be only three reasons for people to stay in this
unhospitable region: first: opal mining, second: sale opals and third: feed the miners.
- Coober Pedy - the unexpected strangest highlight of our tour. A raw and absolutely outstanding ambient. Convince yourself…
THE ABSOLUTELY CRAZIEST, STRANGEST TOWN I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. GET AN INSIGHT INTO THE EXTRAORDINARY SCENERY WITH THE SLIDESHOW.

BOA73.TRIP.PICK: BREAKAWAYS RESERVE: 35km north of Coober Pedy.
An unsealed road leads through this area. Also accessable for conventional cars ;)
Inhospitable nature at its best. This scenery served as set design for apocalyptical films like Mad Max.
Part of the area is characteristically named "moonplain".
BOA73.SIGHT.PICK: UNKNOWN ARTIST ON THE HILL: absolutly crazy
art objects reflecting Coober Pedy. Location: on the hill with the big winch.
BOA73.SIGHT.PICK: DOUGOUT: try living underground in one of
the Dugout motels which are available in all price ranges or visit one - for example "Fays underground home".
BOA73.EATING.PICK: GEMSTONE CAFE: underground cafe.
Popular for its breakfast and lunch. Try the seafood penne***

PREFACE - ABOUT
The issue in hand is supposed to show fragments of our Australia tour 2005 (= antipodean trip) in an emotive way -
just impressions with some private and thus subjective notes prepared for the uncoolpix platform. For this purpose
two slideshows are available:
Antipodean Trip Impressions slideshow
Coober Pedy Special slideshow
In between more detailed fragments of a travel diary and travel picks - a taste of a concept for a travel
guide based on subjective notes in form of travel diaries and a broad focus on photo material:
map | breadcrumbs along the trip
fragment 1 | itchy feet
fragment 2 | get down and relax
fragment 3 | on the way to the middle of nowhere
If the concept of an alternative travel guide arises, the fragments will form a whole.
Note: This issue doesn't claim to be a full travel guide to Australia.
For this purpose you are better served with
www.australien-info.de …btw in
Lonley Planet we trust.
